What is Fluency?
Fluency is effortless reading so the student can focus on the meaning of what is read. It is the bridge to understanding. When students have difficulty decoding and recognizing words; their comprehension suffers. Fluent readers read accurately at a comfortable, appropriate pace, with expression and intonation. Reading Rate
Students should read at a comfortable rate with appropriate phrasing. Students who have a large sight vocabulary and can instantly recognize many words have increased reading rates. They can read smoother, faster and understand what is read. Accuracy Students should read words correctly. Students who read accurately have a strong letter sound relationships. They can take longer words apart and blend them together to decode unknown words. Students use prefixes and suffixes to help them understand the meaning of words. This leads to better understanding of what is read as a whole. |
Expression
Students should read with intonation.
Students who read expressively better understand the nuances of the author. They catch the underlying messages and intent of the written word. Students better understand the dialogue of characters and emotions within the text. Increased expression and intonation help students enjoy what they are reading.
